Happy Lughnasadh, the ancient Gaelic harvest festival marking the first fruits of the season! Families traditionally gathered for fairs, games, music, dancing, and the baking of the first loaves from the new grain!

Channel an ancient tradition today by making a "corn dolly"! Despite the name, "corn" originally meant grains such as wheat, barley, oats, or rye—not the sweet corn we think of today! Farmers believed the spirit of the harvest lived among the grain, so the final sheaf was carefully woven into beautiful figures to shelter that spirit through the winter until it could return to the fields the following spring!

Guinea pigs, of course, might prefer an edible "corn dolly" made from sweet corn—complete with husks, corn silk, and a few tasty kernels!

Today is also Yorkshire Day, celebrating England's largest historic county, renowned for its rolling dales, rugged moorlands, dry-stone walls, and picturesque villages! Celebrations typically include local parades, fairs, good food and good fun!

Amongst other tasty treats, Yorkshire is known for its traditional Yorkshire puddings, pies, beers, Wensleydale cheese, Yorkshire tea, and Parkin ginger cake!

For animal lovers, Yorkshire is forever linked with James Herriot's beloved All Creatures Great and Small books and television series, with its heartwarming tales of country veterinarians and quirky characters.

And of course, Yorkshire is forever associated with the tragic Brontë sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—who grew up in the tiny village of Haworth on the edge of the wild Yorkshire moors. Before becoming celebrated authors, the sisters spent their childhood creating elaborate imaginary kingdoms and writing piggy-sized miniature books no bigger than the palm of a hand!

The dramatic Yorkshire moors are so vividly portrayed that they become characters themselves in Jane Hayre, Wheekering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfelll Hutch!

If you happen visit the Brontë Parsonage, be sure to tragically call out (or wheek) "Heathcliff" into the the windswept moors to show the sow sisters your appreciation!
