Wizard of Oz Day
Don't worry, Toto, we won't let the Wicked Witch of the West get us! It's Wizard of Oz Day, Piggies! ๐ถ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ง ๐ฆ ๐พ ๐งโโ๏ธ ๐งน ๐ฎ ๐ ๐ ๐ช๏ธ
"There's no place like home or the food dish ..."
L. Frank Baumโs The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published this day in May of 1900, introducing readers to Dorothy, Kansas, tornadoes, suspiciously incompetent humbug wizards, and one very determined little companion named Toto!
After being swept away by a tornado, Dorothy and Toto travel the Yellow Brick Road toward the Emerald City in hopes of finding the Wizard of Oz. Along the way they meet a Scarecrow looking for a brain, a Tin Man searching for a heart, and a Cowardly Lion desperately trying to locate his courage!
Some scholars have interpreted The Wizard of Oz as more than a fantasy adventure, seeing in it echoes of the political and economic anxieties of Baumโs and our own era โ debates about power, wealth, public trust, and who controls the story people believe.
The Emerald City is especially striking because its brilliance is partly an illusion: visitors are required to wear green-tinted glasses, making everything appear more dazzling and prosperous than it truly is. More than a century later, the difference between truth and illusion gets harder and harder to discern.
Wheek! Wheek!
