Watermelon Day

It's Watermelon Monday, Piggies & Pals! 🐹 πŸ’— πŸ’— πŸ’— πŸ‰ πŸ‰ πŸ‰ πŸ₯•

If you're picnicking in hot weather with a few wheekers, remember that umbrella and don't turn your back because your herd may well attack your watermelon and end up with pink necks!

Of all the melons, the watermelon is one of the most showy and has been allocated its own day!

And although guinea pigs did not evolve with the sweet watermelon, they may appreciate a seedless nibble in moderation now and then.

Humans, however, have a long history of watermelon eating - and for good reason!

Watermelon has been valued for centuries in traditional medicine. Composed of about 92% water, it helps support hydration while supplying vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium. Its bright red flesh is rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that may help protect cells from oxidative damage and support heart health.

Watermelon is also one of the best natural sources of citrulline, an amino acid that the body converts to arginine and nitric oxide, compounds that help relax blood vessels and may improve circulation and exercise recovery.

Traditional healers in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East have used watermelon flesh, rind, and seeds to soothe urinary discomfort, promote kidney and bladder health, and aid digestion.

Even the often-discarded rind contains nutrients and citrulline, while the seeds provide protein, healthy fats, magnesium, and iron when roasted.
