Twelfth Night—celebrated on January 5th or 6th—was the grand finale of Christmas merrymaking, a last, gleeful revel before ordinary life resumed. Traditionally it was a night of topsy-turvy fun: feasting, dancing, disguises, practical jokes, and the crowning of a Lord (or Abbot) of Misrule to preside over sanctioned chaos.
Twelfth Night was most popular from the late Middle Ages fro the 1300s to the mid-1600s!
