It's all good on a hot summer day!

Perhaps you were traumatized at an early age by what seemed to be perfectly acceptable ice cream with strange candied fruits and nuts marring it. Or perhaps you loved those interesting little pieces! Well, it's time to revisit this classic treat on its designated day!

Spumoni is one of the more flamboyant members of the great ice-cream family—a traditional Italian molded gelato dessert, usually layered in colorful flavors such as pistachio, cherry and chocolate, sometimes with fruit and nuts tucked inside, and sliced rather than scooped.

Gelato itself is ice cream’s smoother, silkier Italian cousin, made with more milk and less cream, churned with less air and served slightly warmer so the flavors really shine.

And that’s just the beginning of the wonderfully confusing world of ice-cream-adjacent treats: sorbet has fruit but no dairy, sherbet sneaks in a little dairy, frozen custard adds egg yolks, while granita, semifreddo, frozen yogurt, kulfi, Italian ice, paletas and shaved ice all have their own delicious variations on the theme.

And although piggies must skip the dairy, chocolate, sugar and truly frozen treats—that has never stopped a determined and entreprenurial guinea pig from joining a food holiday.

Their solution? Veggie Spumoni! green lettuce, ruby-red beet and cool white cucumber, layered into a splendid little tricolore “dessert.” 🥬 ❤️ 🥒
