July's birthstone is the magnificent ruby, a gemstone that has dazzled people for thousands of years. Its brilliant red color comes from tiny traces of chromium, and throughout history rubies have been treasured not only for their beauty, but also for their supposed magical powers!

Across many cultures, rubies were believed to bring protection, courage, good fortune, and vitality. Warriors carried them into battle, kings set them into crowns and armor as protective talismans, and travelers wore them to guard against misfortune. Medieval legends even claimed that a ruby would darken in color to warn its owner of approaching danger!

Of course, the most famous rubies of all may be the sparkling ruby slippers from the beloved 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. While L. Frank Baum's original story featured silver slippers, MGM transformed them into glittering ruby ones to showcase the new Technicolor process. In the film, the slippers become Dorothy's greatest protection against the Wicked Witch of the West and ultimately hold the power to carry her safely home with the unforgettable words, "There's no place like home."
