Happy Mad Hatter Day! The occasion is traditionally celebrated on 10/6, inspired by the mysterious “10/6” tucked into the Mad Hatter’s hat in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But in the famous story, this isn't a date at all—it marks a hat indicating its cos! Ten shillings and sixpence!

And there really was something behind the expression “mad as a hatter.” Hat makers once used mercury compounds in the felting process, and prolonged exposure could cause tremors, irritability and other neurological symptoms—giving the old saying a rather grim bit of truth.

Fortunately, guinea pig hatters have discovered a much safer occupation: putting ridiculous hats made of veggies on their friends!
