Groundhog Day

Consult the weather prognosticating hoggy or piggy of your choice, today! It's Groundhog, Hedgehog, and Wheekin' Weather Cavy Day! 🐹 🦫 🦔 🌤️ 🌨️ 🥕

Observe your groundhog, hedgehog, or guinea pig carefully this morning, February 2nd, Piggies & Pals! If they emerge from their burrow, hedgy-house, or pigloo today and see their shadow due to a sunny morning and run back to safety, there may be six more weeks of cold winter in your future!!! Wheek-Boo! 😩

But if it is cloudy and no startling shadow occurs, then spring will be just around the corner! Wheek-Huzzah! 😀

Groundhog Day began as a European and Pennsylvania German custom in the 18th and 19th centuries, substituting the native North American groundhog for the European hedgehog or marmot, whose behavior was used to predict the weather.

Linked to both Candlemas Day, St Brigid's Day, and the ancient celebration of Imbolc, humans have long watched for signs of winter abating by observing the behavior of furry, and even scaly, friends!

Today, the most famous of "fur-casters" is a groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil of Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania, who has been making predictions since 1887!

Considering that Phil's predictive capabilities have been correct only 40% of the time, take your guinea pig's opinion seriously.
