Falling Leaves Friday

๐Ÿ’š ๐Ÿ’› ๐Ÿƒ Happy Ginkgo Falling Leaves Friday, Piggies & Pals! ๐Ÿน ๐Ÿ‚

It's raining golden fans! Every autumn, the magnificent Ginkgo tree puts on a spectacular display, its distinctive fan-shaped leaves turning from luminous green to brilliant gold before fluttering to the ground, sometimes in a great golden shower over just a few days!

Also known as the Maidenhair Tree, the Ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) is botanically uniqueโ€”the sole surviving member of an ancient lineage of trees dating back some 270 million years, long before the dinosaurs! Native to China, it has been cultivated and revered for centuries, prized for its beauty, longevity, and traditional medicinal and culinary uses.

Its unusual fan-shaped leaves, often divided into two lobes, have a distinctive pattern of veins that repeatedly fork rather than forming the branching networks found in most broadleaf trees. Even more remarkable, individual Ginkgo trees can live for thousands of years, with some believed to be over 3,000 years old!

The name Ginkgo is thought to derive from the Japanese gin kyล, meaning "silver apricot," a reference to its silvery, apricot-like seeds.

And for our little piggies, a golden carpet of fluttering leaves might look like a splendid place for an autumn romp or photo shoot โ€”but Ginkgo leaves and seeds are best left off the guinea pig menu!
