🐹 BREAKING: Protesters Rally at Meta Headquarters Over Rejected Guinea Pig Emoji Proposal

Menlo Park, CA — A group of demonstrators gathered outside Meta Platforms headquarters this morning following the circulation of a controversial draft report proposing the reclassification of guinea pigs as a subgroup of hamsters. Citing renewed public attention from what many are calling the “guinea pig reclassification hoax,” protestors are now urging tech companies to support the creation of a dedicated guinea pig emoji, noting that a previous proposal failed to advance through the Unicode approval process.

The protesters included small-animal advocates and devoted guinea pig enthusiasts, many holding signs reading “We Wheek, Not Squeak,” “Guinea Pigs ≠ Hamsters,” and “Stop the Hamster Substitution.” Several attendees were also seen holding photos of their guinea pigs “for visual evidence.”

The renewed push follows a submission during the 2022 emoji proposal cycle to the Unicode Consortium, the body responsible for standardizing emojis across platforms. The proposal argued that guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are globally popular pets with distinct behaviors and cultural presence.

However, the proposal did not move forward. Review feedback cited:

Visual similarity to the existing 🐹 hamster emoji at small sizes
Category redundancy among small mammal emojis
Unclear distinct usage demand

Protesters say that reasoning is, in their words, “scientifically and emotionally flawed.”

“Anyone who has ever owned a guinea pig can tell the difference instantly,” said one attendee.

Frustration escalated as demonstrators pointed to what they described as “deeply questionable emoji priorities” already supported across platforms, including those used on Facebook.

Among the examples cited:

🪩 Mirror Ball — “a disco accessory with unclear daily application”
🪸 Coral — “not even an animal, technically speaking”
🧌 Troll — “mythical, but somehow approved”
🫗 Pouring Liquid — “an action… who cares?”
🫠 Melting Face — “an existential crisis… still not a guinea pig”

One protester summarized the sentiment:

“We have a melting face, a disco ball, and whatever that pouring thing is—but not a guinea pig? Make it make sense.”

A spokesperson for Meta Platforms reiterated that emoji approval ultimately rests with the Unicode Consortium, though platforms help implement and popularize new additions.

Organizers say they are already preparing a revised submission, with plans to emphasize clearer visual distinctions—such as a rounded, tail-less body shape, expressive eyes, and what one draft reportedly describes as “a posture suggesting immediate awareness of nearby produce.”

Until then, protesters say they will continue their campaign.
