The dragon on the Welsh flag—Y Ddraig Goch (“The Red Dragon”)—is one of the oldest national symbols in Europe. Its origins trace back to early Celtic and Romano-British traditions, and it appears in medieval legend, especially the tale recorded by Geoffrey of Monmouth in which a red dragon (representing the Britons) defeats a white dragon (symbolizing the Saxons).
The red dragon later became associated with Welsh princes and was adopted by the Tudor dynasty, which had Welsh roots. Today, the dragon stands as a powerful emblem of Welsh identity, strength, and heritage.
