Although commonly attributed to Benjamin Franklin, the exact phrase “A penny saved is a penny earned” does not appear as such in Poor Richard's Almanack; Franklin instead wrote versions such as “A penny saved is twopence dear” (1737) and “A penny saved is two pence clear” (1748). Over time, his original wording was simplified into the familiar modern proverb.
