"Reluctant Exchange"

John Joseph Barker of Bath (1824 - 1904). The little boy is crying, not wanting to separate from the red-cheeked apple, not even for a cute guinea pig. Or perhaps the trade is the other way around. John Joseph Barker came from a dynasty of Bath artists, the best known being his father, Thomas Barker. Genre paintings such as this, depicting rustic children in a landscape, were very popular at a time when the population was becoming increasingly urbanised.
