Edmund Bristow

(1787-1876)

Edmund Bristow (1787–1876) was an English painter best known for his small-scale, detailed works depicting animals, rustic scenes, and everyday life. Born in Eton, Buckinghamshire, he showed artistic promise early on and became closely associated with the circle of Sir Edwin Landseer. Bristow exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1809 and 1838, though he lived a somewhat reclusive life, working slowly and often refusing to part with his pictures. His paintings—many of which feature dogs, horses, and village characters—are admired for their naturalism, humor, and fine finish.
